The ‘Flying Fox’ platform. Hilarity soon ensues.
In the year 2004, a group of friends and I attended a small 3 day Paramilitary camp as sponsored by a political party here in my village, called the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP). My friends and I were grouped into teams, with other attendess, and were led by some ex-military personnel in the training, which were our Drill Sergeants.
In the first day, we all underwent a military-styled obstacle course that was climaxed with a “rope gliding”(?) event called the ‘Flying Fox‘.
As I was told by the instructors, this particular jump was to simulate parachute jumps from transport planes. Though I do wonder if it really is the truth, the only truth I will admit from it all was that after the jump, my crotch hurt.
There was one incident during this jump that made it all worthwhile. Watch the video I filmed on that very day and you’ll probably get a basic idea of what to expect.
This video was one of the highlights from the trip. In this video, the current ‘flying fox’ participant on the platform was too scared to jump off. Everyone decided to chip in to ‘cajole’ him. I’m the guy shouting in the video. =D
SUPP Paramilitary Camp, 2004. The ‘Flying Fox’.
Witness the great Espirit De Corps displayed by all the attendants in cajoling the frightened jumper.
Watching this video makes me laugh everytime because of the pure absurdity of the whole situation. I mean, we were cajoling him as if he were a suicide jumper on a tall building. If you listen carefully, what actually started as just a few people ‘motivating’ him, eventually turned into a complete mob by everyone present on the ground.

Houston, we have lift-off! Another successful jumper off the platform.
I especially loved the part at the end when everyone actually clapped and cheered for him, for actually getting off that blasted platform. Though we did not know who he was there and then, everyone was happy for him just for taking the plunge and for not holding up the line any longer than it was necessary.
In a nutshell, the entire camp trip was extremely fun as I remembered it!
Lots of weird and unusual memories to remember it by.
On a side note, I’ve also noticed that when I went “Wooooooo!” in the video, I sound a lot like Hard Gay. That bothers me greatly.
Though I must admit, where did all that energy I used to have has gone to? Hmmm…Still, it was fun to revisit memory lane and see how far I’ve grown and see how things used to be in my life.
Ah…I want 2007 to be a repeat or probably, an expansion, of all these crazy events that I’ve experienced in life.
Well, another slice of al-holic for the masses, exposed again. ![]()
